Role Description

We’re seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead and scale a team of skilled software engineers focused on building the core platform that powers the future of mental health technology at LifeStance.

  • Create scalable systems, ensuring seamless interoperability (with a strong focus on FHIR).
  • Develop robust microservices that enable secure, real-time data exchange across clinical and operational systems.
  • Define technical strategy, cultivate a high-performance engineering culture, and deliver resilient platform capabilities that support clinicians, patients, and internal teams.
  • Work closely with Product, Design, Data, DevOps, Security, and other stakeholders to drive platform delivery and quality at scale.

This is a hands-on leadership position that combines technical depth with team management.

  • Lead and develop a high-performing engineering team building event-driven microservices and APIs using Node.js, TypeScript, and AWS Lambda.
  • Define and champion the technical roadmap for key product initiatives, ensuring alignment with the overall business strategy and technology vision.
  • Provide architectural guidance and lead the design of complex, scalable systems.
  • Drive decisions on technology selection and best practices for cloud-native development, particularly with a focus on AWS Lambda and serverless architectures.
  • Accountable for driving the technical strategy to improve system performance by 20% and reduce infrastructure costs by 15% year-over-year.
  • Serve as a primary liaison between engineering and product, design, and clinical operations teams.
  • Translate business needs into technical requirements and technical constraints into business risks and opportunities.
  • Establish and uphold engineering standards around observability, performance, and system health.
  • Own critical backend services from design to deployment, ensuring reliability and continuous enhancement.
  • Implement and enforce best practices for security, access control, and data governance.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor teams in adopting new technologies and engineering practices (e.g., CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, test automation) to increase efficiency and quality.
  • Lead incident response and foster a culture of continuous learning through blameless retrospectives.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, capacity management, and hiring to support team growth.
  • Encourage a culture of technical ownership, curiosity, and engineering rigor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, with 5+ years in an engineering leadership or management role.
  • Strong proficiency in building APIs and microservices with Node.js, TypeScript, and modern communication protocols (REST, gRPC, GraphQL).
  • Deep understanding of event-driven architectures, serverless computing, and AWS Lambda.
  • Extensive, hands-on experience with cloud computing platforms, specifically AWS, including deep knowledge of serverless technologies like AWS Lambda, API Gateway, and Step Functions.
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD tooling, and observability stacks (e.g., Terraform, Datadog, OpenTelemetry, Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
  • Solid foundation in software design, testing strategies, and production resilience.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder collaboration skills.
  • Strong sense of ownership and ability to drive initiatives across teams and domains.

  • Extensive, hands-on experience in the healthcare technology domain.
  • A deep understanding of healthcare data standards like FHIR is a significant plus.
  • Familiarity with FHIR and healthcare data interoperability.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce Health Cloud or health-focused CRM integrations.
  • Background in observability and distributed tracing/logging pipelines.
